Mahela appointed new Captain
Monday, 23 January 2012 19:24

Mahela Jayawardene has been reappointed as the captain of the Sri Lanka team for the upcoming tri-series in Australia after Tillakratne Dilshan relieved himself of captaincy duties.

Dilshan quit a day after returning from South Africa where Sri Lanka lost the three-match Test series 2-1 and five-match one-day series 3-2.

Jayawardene captained the team for more than three years from 2006 before Sangakkara took over.

The stylish batsman, who led Sri Lanka to the 2007 World Cup runners-up spot, will be the captain for all three formats of the game.

Meanwhile the Sri Lanka cricket selection panel led by former player Asantha de Mel also recalled Farveez Maharoof and Chanaka Welegedera for next month’s triangular one-day series featuring Australia and India.

All-rounder Maharoof and paceman Welegedera each played his last one-dayer in 2010.

Angelo Mathews was retained as vice-captain for the series.
